This collection reflects the donor's years of research and teaching in the field of anthropology of the Washo and Great Basin Indians and does not include any of his work on African cultures. Included are research notes, professional papers (by d'Azevedo and other anthropologists), and clippings, all focusing on Washoe Indians, Calif. Indians of the northeastern Sierra Nevada Mountains, Great Basin Indians, archaeology of those regions, and Washo baskets, linguistics, peyotism, mythology, and food sharing; minutes and reports of Washo tribal government, the Washo Cultural Center and Foundation at Lake Tahoe, and founding of the Inter-Tribal Council of Nevada; copies of testimony and case files related to the claims case of the Washoe Indians of Nev. and Calif., against the federal government, the Washo case against the Nev. Dept. of Fish and Game over rights to the Pine Nut Mountains, and misc. other Indian legal issues; unpublished research papers on topics related to Great Basin and Washo Indians; Great Basin Anthropological Conference organizations materials and papers; and misc. materials on contemporary Indians on topics such as education, criminality, and the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony Christian Center (compiled by the Rev. C. Clyde Mathews, Jr.).

Warren L. d'Azevedo joined the faculty of the University of Nevada in 1963. The anthropology department was initiated under joint sponsorship with the Desert Research Institute.
